When people walk away from the church, what we should ask is “Has the church walked away from Jesus?” Jesus was and is the most magnetic, compelling figure in all of history, and guess what? The church is his body, a living, breathing, beautiful, 3D model of his love, his grace, and his truth. Well, at least it’s supposed to be. Sometimes it’s nowhere near that calling, and we’ll talk about that too. But at its best, the church is a community where the way of Jesus is fleshed out for all to see. Most folks aren’t rejecting church. They’re rejecting churches that look little like Jesus. Our opportunity is to be so committed to Jesus that we give others doubts about their doubts about church! So let’s talk about being and becoming the body of Christ. Let’s remember that church is God’s idea and it’s a good one. And – most of all – let’s be a church like Jesus.
